ALTEC LANSING Model 14 Studio Monitor Refurb Project

Finished value in 2025 about $1,700

1980 2-Way Speakers with:
- Mantaray Horns with Tangerine Plugs for wide dispersion
- 12" Woofers
- Mid and High Frequency "Equalization Network"
- Speaker Protection Circuit adds "absolutely zero distortion"
- 8 Ohms, 95dB Sensitivity, Rated at 10-350 Watt RMS with Protection at peaks upto 200 Watts
- "Voice Of the Theater" Family from Altec Lansing

A pair of these would cost about $1,000 in 1980 - It has been said that in the 80's "every recording studio in California used these". Capital Recording Studio in LA of course had the larger - nearly identical Altec Lansing Model 17's hanging in their huge chamber.

The speakers came to us with water damaged cabinets and torn woofer cones

However they worked and sounded pretty darn good.

The cabinets were repaired and reinforced to be very solid.

A whole new bottom had to be constructed, the speaker still has cosmetic walnut veneer damage on the bottom sides. But hardly noticeable standing in front, looking down at the speaker.

New Banana Jack, Bare Wire and Lug Connection Terminals added on the back.

An L-Pad control added between the crossover and horn to effectively increase woofer volume.

The original Horn Diaphragms worked well but visibly showed flaws. New ones were installed in the Mantaray Drivers.

- Crossovers were Recapped with MPT Film Capacitors.  A new HiFi resistor was also installed.

- New higher quality wiring used inside

- Protection Circuit checked and Tested

Woofers were completly rebuilt with New Woofer Cones, Coils, Spiders and Surrounds.

The grills were not included when we got them, but they are rather bland in our opinion.

Removable metal Woofer Grills were then installed for more of a finished professional audio look.

Separate 11.5" tall Bases with Rubber Feet bring the total height upto 41".

Bases constructed using 2x12 wood, spacers between woofer and tweeter cabinet made of 2x4 wood.

Bases and spacers stained black then sprayed lightly with satin black paint.

These are 80 lb Speakers with removable 20 lb bases, bringing the total to about 100lbs each

These are Ideal for large rooms and loud music, with their Protection Circuit they would be perfect as HiFi PA monitors in a bar or club with live music.

Our professional HiFi equipment reviewer, enjoyed these and was "amazed" at the soundstage - especially the height of the sound stage at and above the speaker cabinet.
